Athletics fall short again in A.L. West
For a time in the late 90’s and the early part of this decade, the Oakland Athletics were defying odds as one of the few small market teams to compete with the big boys on a regular basis.
However, general manager Billy Beane’s magic seems to have run out over the past several years as trades and offseason signings have had poor results.
The team has reconstructed itself over and over again to no avail. The A’s are once again stuck in neutral, sitting at the bottom of the American League West.
Some of the blame must fall on Beane, whose moneyball philosophy used to be the hot thing around baseball. However, those days are long gone, though some parts of his philosophy are still used by other teams.
